STRANAHAN TO BE DEMOLISHED!

Classmate Bill Blackwell first called our attention to a January 2006 article detailing plans for the demolition and rebuilding of our old Alma Mater [CLICK HERE  to read the article].

UPDATED INFORMATION
Here is the latest information provided by the Broward County Public Schools Community Relations Office

A phased plan for the replacement of Stranahan High School is scheduled to begin in 15 months or so (that would make it sometime around September 2007). They will use what is called the "flip-flop" method; that is, new buildings will first be constructed on the athletic field on the east side of the campus before demolition of the old buildings take place. Thirty months from now (sometime around January 2009), demolition of the old buildings will begin. Only three science labs, one classroom and one office will be kept from the old building, but those will be extensively remodeled.  Stranahan as we have always known it will cease to exist!
The news is difficult to hear for many of us.  It seems like only yesterday when Stranahan was being built! I have memories of playing in the gymnasium while it was under construction, swinging from a rope attached to an overhead girder and being chased away by the angry workmen. Wow - that was nearly 50 years ago!!!
I suppose it's all part of a natural progression - the old making way for the new. I'll keep you informed as new information becomes available. In the mean time, I'll be making plans to be there with my camera when the wrecking ball takes the first swing  ...... and maybe grab a souvenir or two.
