Aimee was my best friend at
Stranahan. I often teased her because her father who had
a nursery developed a new hybrid gardenia and named it
after her. The last time I saw her was when I had
returned to Fort Lauderdale to visit my parents and she
was also visiting her parents. We each had a little
girl, toddler age, and we got together and they played.
That was over 30 years ago not too long before she and
her daughter were killed in an airplane crash.

The first I remember of Aimee was at Broward Estates
Elementary. Can't remember if it was the 5th or 6th
grade, probably the 6th. She was the gentlest, kindest
person I met, and I would have to say the same about her
family. several of us were invited to Aimee's birthday
party that year, and what a party it was. We all
received orchids, which her family grew, and ate, among
other interesting things --seaweed! That was a
first for all of us, I think. Her father used to send us
leis of orchids from time to time. We had no idea how
special that was. Aimee was among the brightest of the
bunch, and my only regret was that I didn't get to know
her better over the years.
I was living in Atlanta when I saw the front page story
about the plane crash in Dallas, which took the life of
Aimee and one of her children. I was an editor at the
newspaper at the time and was able to get the details of
the crash and confirmation of her identity. It made me
sad at the time and makes me sad still. She was such a
bright light.
