Memories of Terry Winder

by Russ Foster

Terry and I were good friends beginning at Parkway Junior High School.  We were pals through Stranahan and then later were stationed together at Pope Air Force Base, North Carolina.  I was in charge of the Airmen's Record section and when I saw that Terry was incoming to Pope AFB, I arranged to have him work for me. He was the best man for me at my wedding in June of ' 68 and then after we were both discharged, our families lived within a mile or so of each other in Lauderhill and Lauderdale Lakes.  I will always remember Terry with fondness and, of course, his years with Diane and the kids.

Memories of Terry Winder

Terry was one of the kind spirits taken from us much too soon. I played baseball and football with Terry through most of my teen years. I lost touch with Terry after graduation as I did most of my classmates. I remember Terry as being most competitive but always a gentleman. If he defeated you he never "rubbed it in" and if you defeated him he was the first to congratulate you and shake your hand. I never heard Terry say an unkind word about anyone.  He was always the same person whether he was amongst the "stars" or the "common folk".  I am sure Terry is missed by everyone who knew him. I know I miss him.

Memories of Terry Winder

Terry and I go way back to 1950, as three year olds playing in the same sandbox in Sharpsville, Pa.  His family was really the adventurous ones, as they migrated to Florida before ours did in '55.  My parents lost touch with them when they left, and I didn't know or remember until Stranahan High School Football team when he acquired the reputation of carrying a bunch of opponents across the goal line.
At the 20 year reunion, I did get to have a few minutes with Terry to reminisce about our common hometown, and was inspired by his strong convictions.  After the reunion, we heard from Diane about Terry, and it saddened all of us on the committee tremendously.

Terry was a good husband, father, and from our perspective a good friend.  May he dwell in Heaven forever.

Terry, do you remember Hank's American Legion Golf Tournament where we spent all our money at the beer wagon and played the 18th hole totally blind? We go into the dinner program and we find out that our team actually won the tournament. Must have been skill buddy. I think of you always and I hope both you and Hank (Terry's Dad) rest in peace!!
